| Esoteric Symbology I am available to answer questions on the meanings and history of Esoteric Symbols ('Esoteric' relating to the knowledge of secret societies on a general level, or to secretly held traditions which are not openly disclosed), their meanings across different traditions and, when applicable, their astronomical significance. Esoteric symbols often represent astronomical phenomena such as conjunctions or eclipses. These phenomena themselves were viewed as symbols of deeper philosophical or Arcane knowledge, and presented to the uninitiated as messages from the gods, which, from their perspective, they were. Esoteric or Arcane knowledge is associated with secretly held traditions of great antiquity (greater than most imagine) which is held exclusively for a small group of Initiates and thus hidden from the general population. The word Occult actually means ‘Hidden’, or more precisely, ‘In Shadow’.
The Cross of St. Andrew, to take a well known example, is derived from Solar observations which are only to be made at the latitude of Scotland or Ireland, though it also ties to the constellation Orion (which the ancient Egyptians called Osiris). The Book of Revelations is quite literally ‘Written Across the Sky’, to those who understand how to read it. Esoteric symbols often show up in flags and national symbols (such as the American Eagle, which on the original Great Seal of the United States was actually the Phoenix). It may be that the Bald Eagle became the official bird of the United States of America because of its resemblance to a large black bird with a white head which appears prominently in much of Alchemy.
