Have you ever shopped at a Stop and Shop supermarket? They have a similar system to what you describe. The wands store the scanned barcodes and store them. The shopper scans each item and places it directly

Create a Group By query that groups by Medication and Sums the doses. That will give you a total by medication. If you want to group by med and further by patient you can do that. Hope this helps,
You would need to have a table that records each dose given to each patient. You would then have another query that subtracts those transactions from the balance at the start of the year. Group that by
