Expert Profile: Joyce Dowling

Expertise:  I`ve lived in the Maryland Washington DC suburbs for 18 years now. I`m learning more & more about southern Prince George`s & Charles Counties in particular. Want to tour a farm for free? Looking for DC area camp sites? Want to learn more about John Wilkes Booth and other southern Maryland sites? Moving into the area? This is a great place to live and visit!
Received a US Comm. United Nation Humanitarian Award for organizing the most diverse religious worship service in DC. Once nominated Prince Georgian of the Year.

What do you still hope to achieve/learn in this field?  I'm trying to get to know my neighbors and what's going on in the area, which constantly changes, so it's a lifelong pursuit.
Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:  Prince George's County has the highest population of middle class African Americans in the nation. Housing is more reasonable in Prince George's County and the rush hour traffic is milder than elsewhere in the region if you are not attempting to go over the Wilson Bridge.
Something controversial or provocative about this subject  Prince George's County gets bad press and is not equally treated in many people's opinion. County officials feel that this is perpetuated by referring to the county as "PG" which is a sign of disrespect. It has a long history of racism which persists, but which we are working hard on dispelling.
What do you like about this subject?  This is a very diverse area in many ways - racial, economic, religious, cultural, etc.

2004-11-12  low cost and non-alcohol fun in DC Balti area Hi David, There are a lot of low-cost, non-alcoholic things to do, BUT it depends on what you like. This Sat. there's a free open mike concert (variety of different kinds of music) in Camp Springs -...
2004-11-09  Trip to Baltimore - Washington DC-Virginia Hi Bill, Metro rates are higher during rush hour. Morning rush hour is up to apparently 9:30 AM and starts again at 3:00 PM (my guess of 9:00-3:15 was wrong). The parking rates aren't different, but...
2004-11-08  Trip to Baltimore - Washington DC-Virginia Bill, Yes, parking in the city is problematic and when sight-seeing, it's not practical to drive from place-to-place and find parking each time. There are parking garages that are quite expensive (maybe...
2002-07-31   Washington D C David, My expertise is more Maryland in the DC area than DC tourism, but I've certainly toured DC many times, though I've never stayed in a hotel there. I'd be very surprised if you could find a hotel...
