Expert Profile: Rupert Evans

Expertise:  printing and binding books. I wrote a book on this subject in 1995 (it is still in print) and am in the process of writing another. I use a scanner, Hewlett-Packard model 8100 laser printer, Xerox copier, etc to print books (and other items), and do most of the binding with adhesives (cold and hot), rather than sewing.

What do you like about this subject?  I enjoy meeting people and helping them to publish the things they are writing. Since I am retired, I refuse to print and bind more than fifty copies personally, though I can steer folks to other publishers who can handle any number of copies. I have published genealogies, autobiographies, poetry, travelogues, philosophy, and adventures.
What do you still hope to achieve/learn in this field?  I am always learning new ways of printing and binding, though I have been doing this type of work since I was fourteen (many years ago).
Something controversial or provocative about this subject  Some people denigrate adhesive-bound books, partly because some people call such books "Perfect" Bound. Of course, no method of binding is perfect, but ninety percent of the books published today are adhesive bound. There are good reasons why adhesive binding is so popular.
