Expert Profile: Kenneth L Pratt

Expertise:  Packaging Machinery. Application and repair of all brands of stretch wrap machinery including fully automatic units, most strapping machinery, tape machinery, and shrink wrap machinery. 35 Years experience in a variety of machinery maintenance and purchasing fields, 35 Years experience in equipment maintenance and specifying, including 13 Years experience specializing in packaging machinery application and service, primarily in the manufacturing/distribution environment.
I have attended industry school when available, but much of the equipment I deal with is undocumented and orphaned. Every day is a challenge to figure out how machinery is put together, and what can be done to counteract operator destruction and make it live again. I think that my ability to appreciate and communicate with the workers in a business is more important and satisfying than fixing machinery. My greatest accomplishment is probably avoiding death on the highway.

What do you like about this subject?  Packaging machinery is found in virtually every king of business, from a shrink wrap machine in the vault of a bank, to stretch wrap machinery used to wrap gold bars, fresh sod, or garbage. I enjoy meeting working people and seeing the tremendous variety of business. Every day I learn something new.
What do you still hope to achieve/learn in this field?  Advanced automation through PLC and PC control has revolutionized industrila machinery. I hope to learn this automation and to apply it practically to older equipment.
Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:  Packaging is not a bad word. Improved packaging methods help preserve items from spoiling, tampering and theft.
Something controversial or provocative about this subject  See above.
