Expert Profile: Ron Shepard

Expertise:  I'll speak to equipment concerns, barriers to advancement, beginner, intermediate, and advanced turn shaping skills. I love working with Moguls, Gates, Powder... I'll talk about Ice, but I won't like it;). I can help with equipment and tuning issues, as well as technique. I can only help with skis I've tried, and I am a firm believer that you buy a boot fitter, not a boot. Hope I can help!

Something controversial or provocative about this subject  I am not all about carving. I think one of the pratfalls of shaped ski skiing is that people have forgotten how to skid, how to slip, and how to finesse their turns. Carving is cool, but a versatile skier can do it all.
Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:  Skiing is more about the ankles than any other joint in your body. If you can learn to mobilize your ankles, you can take your turns to the next level.
What do you like about this subject?  I really enjoy working with my students; I get the greatest satisfaction when they experience something for the first time and can feel the difference. Moguls are the biggest challange a skier faces- so when I can offer effective tactics for mogul success, I feel I'm offering something of value.
What do you still hope to achieve/learn in this field?  I want to be skiing when I'm 80, so it's all about developing efficiency in my movements. I remember a book from childhood- Jonathan Livingston Seagull, about (obviously) a Seagull who loves to fly, and to perfect his own flying. I want to get there in skiing.

2008-06-10  Race ski for 14 year old girl Hi Sarah, Since you say these are going to be fun race skis, I am guessing that they are going to be two-event skis- both Slalom and GS on the same pair. In this case, you are going to want to go a...
2008-06-09  Sintered base waxing. Hi Nick, If the skis are new, and have no oxidation (white haze) on the bases, they'll need no prep work before waxing. If they have a haze, you can scotch-brite them first, but you'll end up creating...
2008-05-14  need advice about new skis Hello Cynthia, At Tahoe, you'll find a good shop by asking around, then once you are there, ask them specifically if they do alignments and boot sole grinding. Then, ask if they have a Cambell dynamic...
