Steve, The theory should be fine but with regard to the actual structural attachments I'd refer you to a structural engineer to verify that the attachment can take the additional structural elements.
Jim, The short answer is no. The type of roofing product does not prevent ice damming. A properly installed roof may prevent moisture intrusion from the effects of an ice dam but the roofing does not
