Expertise

The areas in which I have gained the most experience are cat health and feral cat management/rescue. I provide supportive care to chronically ill cats, hospice care to terminally ill cats and also am involved in trap-neuter-return efforts. My specialities lie in taming feral cats and in the allopathic treatment of cats with illnesses or special needs. I also have owned Siamese, Himalayans, Abyssinians, Russian Blues, Savannahs, Bengals, Peterbalds, Don Sphynx and Oriental Shorthairs and am well-versed in cat breeds as well as cat behavior and nutrition.

Experience in the area

I have 15 years of extensive experience with cats ranging from breeding to medical care. My daily routine consists of caring for cats with diabetes, thyroid disease, kidney failure, feline leukemia, feline AIDS as well as feral cats. I have experience with liver patients, heart patients, feline infectious peritonitis, cancer, recovery from amputation and trauma, congenital deformities and most every disease in between. I have assisted cats giving birth and hand-nursed kittens who were neglected by their mother from 2 days old through weaning.

Education/Credentials

15 years' hands-on experience

What do you still hope to achieve/learn in this field?

I am learning things every day through networking with other cat lovers and through research. I hope to learn new information as it becomes available and will strive to be educated in the most up to date health issues. I also hope to further my knowledge in feline genetics.

Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:

Cats have the estimated IQ of a two-year-old child and have the ability to understand a vocabulary of 36 words or more!

Something controversial or provocative about this subject

Declawing is widely accepted in the United States. But if you take a closer look at the procedure and its lasting effects, you'll realize that it's actually animal cruelty. And many countries have already outlawed it as such.

2012-02-06 Feeding sick cat (histoplasmosis):

Hi Yvonne,    I have no problem with what Dulce is feeding her cat, although I would probably replace the Pet-Tinic and Baby D with Nutri-Cal, a vitamin, mineral and calorie supplement, just because I

2012-02-06 cats birth:

Hi Sam,    If your cat seems to be resting comfortably, you may wait as long as 6 hours. Labor often resumes after a break of a few hours, but there should be no signs of distress during this time. If

Hi Gareth,    She needs to see a vet, immediately. At this young age, they are subject to hypoglycemia if they don't eat every several hours, as well as dehydration if they won't drink. If the baby isn't

2012-02-03 Spayed Cat in Heat?:

Hi Daisy,    Thanks for doing this good deed. An ear tip would seem to be evidence enough that she's spayed, but the vet should be able to feel some scar tissue at the incision site, as well, to confirm
