Sociology helps us to understand the influence of society on the individual. People's behavior, attitudes, and perceptions are all deeply affected by the social context. Yet, individuals also influence society.
It's an ongoing quest to understand the true power of social forces.
The "Looking Glass Self" concept is the idea that our self-perception is based on our understanding of how other people see us.
As children raised beyond human influence show, it's exposure to society that makes a human being a person. Excluded from society, humans are almost unrecognizable as people. The process of socialization is required to create what we consider to be a person.
