Videotape is being phased out, yet there is no true archival, affordable, replacement format for videotape, DVD is not it, that's for sure. Film actually lasts the longest at this point in time. Solid State technology may eventually be the archival winner.
I don't want to see the day when film is no longer made at all and everyone "creates' via the computer and only via the "latest and greatest" software. I don't like the idea that basic creative tools can be pulled away from the user at any moment by software obsolescence or "upgrades". Apple introduces Snow Leopard and my Canon Powershot camera will not upload.

In rereading your question I would suggest that any director can only make so many films before funding dries out. Sometimes they may actually get a 10 picture deal and even get deposits for each film
