In 1979, Shirlee Fonda brought step-daughter Jane Fonda to Gilda Marx's exercise studio in Los Angeles. Richard Simmons opened his own exercise studio because he was "too enthusiastic" at Gilda's. Kathy Smith has evolved into one of the industry's leading experts. All three had their start at Gilda's, one of the grand-dames of fitness. The rest, as they say, is history.

The growth of Pilates exercise shows the influence of the dance world on the fitness industry. Pilates is usually known as "floor exercise" in jazz and modern dance classes.
