Etiquette is fundamentally about kindess. The 'rules' were put in place so that people would know what was expected and be able to be comfortable around others.
To help people see that manners are not a snobbish way to judge others or make them feel ill at ease. It's quite the opposite.
The biggest shifts in thinking come after wars, generally.
Some of the most well mannered people that I have ever encountered have had few of the 'advantages' of wealth, education or money.
