Something controversial or provocative about this subject  The average amount of transfers of "wealth" resulting in penalties since the passage of the Deficit Reduction Act, wherein Congress intended to curb practices of "millionaires getting on Medicaid", is about $ 15,000.00.
Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:  There is no exception to the transfer penalty for tithing to your church. If you lose your house to foreclosure and the amount of the debt is less than the fair market value, you will be disqualified from Medicaid because you have "transferred it for less than fair market value." This is the same if you lose it in a tax sale.
What do you like about this subject?  I enjoy helping people who truly need help the most. In my experience, those in the position of caretaker have the hardest job in the world.
What do you still hope to achieve/learn in this field?  I learn something every day. I can't imagine that will change. The laws and rules change every day and new law is created every day. I hope to accomplish some changes in this area of the law to alleviate unfair and unintended results from the latest changes in the Medicaid eligibility process.

2008-11-14  nursing home wanting Mom moved elsewhere Linda, every state has a long term care ombudsman and in fact the nursing home is usually required to post who it is and how to contact them. They are advocates for nursing home residents and can help...
