Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems (although I'm NOT an avian veterinarian), nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact an avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.

Experience in the area

Experience: Over 20 years raising parrots and over 13 years raising pigeons. Organizations: Currently, American Racing Pigeon Union and American Federation of Aviculture. Prior member Miami Valley Bird Club, Southern Ohio Pigeon Association, National Cockatiel Society, Miami Valley Sportsman's Club, others. Publications: Monthly newsletters of bird clubs.

Publications

I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England.

Education/Credentials

American Federation of Aviculture, completed Level I course, Fundamentals of Aviculture. Keeping/breeding parrots and other birds for over 20 years.

What do you like about this subject?

I really enjoy birds and know people need help caring for them. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience.

What do you still hope to achieve/learn in this field?

Just like everything else, there's MUCH to know/learn about aves...it's a never-ending process! Visit my website still under construction: http://www.angelfire.com/falcon/birdinfo/index.html

Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:

Birds are fun, very intelligent, and like to interact/communicate with their human companions every chance they get (even little parakeets). I'd like to help people recognize this interaction in order to raise awareness about birds and help people learn to care for their birds properly.

Hi, Alice, I'm sorry I didn't see your post sooner. It was in the question pool and I just saw it. You are great to try and help this bird. Yes, you can buy dove food or any type of wild bird food

2009-03-28 Parakeets and Cockatiels:

Hi, Ed, It depends on the personalities of the individual birds involved and other factors, such as sufficient cage space, sex of the birds, etc. Each parrot has its own personality just like humans

2009-03-28 ringneck dove nest:

Hi again, Kate, I understand what you mean now. You didn't pull the egg early enough so the parents wouldn't incubate it. Eggs need to be pulled before about the 7th day. Some birds start incubating

2009-03-28 Cockatiel with lame leg/foot:

Hi, Jo, If you allow your tiel free roam in your home, it's possible that your tiel hurt its leg/foot on something, such as getting her nails/foot/leg caught in something (fabric, string, or other)

2009-03-13 parakeet beak discoloration:

Hi, Katie, I really don't think you have anything to worry about. I can't seem to be able to find the drawing. The coloration of a beak can change mainly in the upper half of the beak and can be caused
