Home improvements and furnishings are the real parts that matter. I enjoy working with the "homeowners" and making sure they get what they want. Ask me anything about home improvements and let me surprise you.
I have been a remodeling Contractor for 25 yrs. That is a lot of satisfied customers to brag about.

The REAl answer will alarm you. If you have forced air heat/air, you need to have enough space to accomplish air return. If you have 8" round duct feeding the room, you need 50 square inches of space
My first concern is the looseness you are talking about. You want a very SoUND surface. If anything is loose...remove it. Take a hammer and tap all around. If it sounds solid...leave it. If hollow
It was a poor design of the builder...and it gives very little options. You will either spread out seating..to leave travel thru the room...or create an island of furniture to walk around. Yea I know
My dad would do this because of the strength of the OLDER materials. If you can find a web that is strong enough...he would put the clip on one side, then use a screw in the clip for the other side.
I will recommend that you seek a very high end stainless steel. The better the product, the darker the finish. You dont want a "tin" sound when you install it. Deep and tough wall will add to your kitchen
