My goal is to end puppy-mill style breeding for all dog breeds and the pet store type of sales for animals except fish. I do not believe the AKC has a vested interest in the long term health of the dog categories it assigns because it does not stop forced heat and excessive breeding on small gene pools.

Bonnie, Your Sheltie is a danger to your child. Do not let that dog near your daughter until you have acted. Where I live by law if a dog bites and breaks the skin it must be put down. First:
the fact that he is eating and does run to your door and bed means that you are on the right track; he obviously feels safe in your home so: you are right, time is the answer He needs to build confidence
