Expert Profile: Frank Leeding

Expertise:  I can (possibly) answer questions regarding art history, technique, theory, and the occasional quandry. In addition to drawing and painting (mainly with acrylics these days), i know a bit about printmaking: Intaglio (etching), relief, offset, transfer and some things about photography. I also use a welding torch to "draw" in metal and then pound the sheets flat and print them. I pretty much "live" in 2D (and much 4D (time); but, 3D is just sort of "thick" version of 2D to me;)

Experience in the area
As an artist I [sic] have shown my art work in both open and juried shows. I have an extensive background in both studio and cultural studies in art and related areas. I currently hold bachelors and master degrees in art and technology. In addition, I write extensively on "art theory". And I'm fairly good at mixing paint.

Education/Credentials
BSCS, University of North Texas, Denton. MA (ATEC), University of Texas at Dallas, Richardson.

Awards and Honors
First place, TIPA: "Brookhaven College - The First 25 Years" (shared with my editor Ivana Corsalle.

What do you like about this subject?  I find the vast ranges of the *possible* in art and in technology to be quite stimulating. And in my (SciFi/Futurist) imaginings contemplate that if we do find really adanced alien civilisations that they might not creat works of art out of solar systems or maybe even galaxies.
What do you still hope to achieve/learn in this field?  There are always things to learn - every new technique must be mastered as best we can, and then we get to use it (when it seems appropriate). If you're not doing/learning something new everyday, then it's been wasted for the most part.
Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:  Because of the market for "signed/authenticated" art, many of the older paintings were often modified (especially the signature) by dealers to bring much more to them. And of course, *many* artists used assistants to do much of the work. In some cases, these are well docmented and part of the artist's way of working.
Something controversial or provocative about this subject  Ultimately, every technology can be used for art. As the race towards more and more realism in CGI (computer graphics imaging) in films, many artists (such as myself) return the "the hand of the artist" - prefering "hypermedia" to the "immedia" of (eg) the Renaiisance.
