Definitely use "special" adhesives--depending upon the project. Note that I said adhesive instead of glue because for many applications you'll want other sticky products. For attaching photos, I use a

Hi- You can spray it with a few kinds of sprays...one is a de-acidification spray (but the paper bag has a lot of lignin and the spray does nothing for that and so it's not really very archivally safe)
