Expert Profile: Mike Turner

Expertise:  Folk Music, particularly the Child Ballads and that great body of industrial and work-related songs which arose during the Industrial Revolution. I am well-versed in the history of the Folk Revival, and I have a particular interest in political and agit-prop songs, as well as in traditional Irish dance music. For ten years I was a committee member and resident singer/song-writer/musician with the Grey Cock Folk Club in Birmingham (the pre-eminent traditional club in the English midlands, which was founded by Charles Parker of `Radio Ballad` fame).

What do you like about this subject?  What I like about the music of the people, is that all human life is there. In their songs, no subject is taboo. In their music, a vast range of rhythmic and melodic ideas abound.
What do you still hope to achieve/learn in this field?  Phil Tanner, of Llangennith on the Gower peninsula, was still singing in his 90's. If I can do the same I'll die happy.
Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:  Pete Seeger quotes an old banjo-picker who was asked if he could read music. "Can I read music? Hell, there are no notes to a banjo - you just play it!"
Something controversial or provocative about this subject  There are a lot of songwriters out there who think 'folk' is a real neat label to sell under, without ever understanding what is really behind it.

Thanks Mike. It was a pop song actually. It was sung by at least two female vocalists with acoustic guitar accompanyment.

Ah, so it's just a silly take on "hoe-downs" in general. That's the word/term I was looking for.

I respectfully appreciate your take on the bum song, but perhaps you might look at it with a more open eye and mind. Papa sang it as an homage to the b

2008-07-25   Real song of parody Hi Gerald, Rudeness doesn't bother me, there's an abundance of that in the tradition, but these lyrics are a bit too flip for my taste. The sense of the text is a bit in the direction of Tom Lehrer...

2008-07-08  Pops Hoe-down Hi Maureen, Thank you for drawing this piece to my attention. I'm not sure of all the titles by any means, but I got the following from one listen-through :- (1) ??? (2) a hoedown tune, probably...
2008-07-05  "Foggy Dew" clawhammer Hi Ryan, A competent musician should be able to sit down with a recording of a "Foggy Dew" performance and work out a set of chords for it. Clawhammer implies a certain level of musical competence -...
