Expert Profile: Kathleen MacNaughton

Expertise:  As both a registered nurse and health educator, as well as someone living with asthma/allergies, I can answer questions about what asthma is, how it is diagnosed, asthma symptoms, asthma triggers, asthma treatment--both traditional and holistic--and tips for living with asthma.

Experience in the area
I have had mild persistent asthma and severe eye, nose, and skin allergies all of my life. In addition, I am a registered nurse with more than 30 years of experience caring for people with chronic illness. For the past 7 years, I have been writing consumer health education materials, both online and offline, with a specialty in asthma and allergies. I have also been the asthma guide at About.com for the past 18 months.

What do you like about this subject?  Educating people about asthma and allergies is my passion, both as one who has lived with these diseases all my life, as well as being a nurse and active health educator on the Web. I truly believe that anyone with asthma can live a life without limits.
What do you still hope to achieve/learn in this field?  I hope to help people to learn how to manage their asthma and live successfully with it.
Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:  Asthma is not just a child's disease, though certainly it is most common in children. But adults and even older adults can develop asthma at any point in their lives.
Something controversial or provocative about this subject  There are some natural, or alternative, therapies that are beginning to prove useful in the management of asthma.
