Expertise

American Fine Art Paintings.
Oils, Watercolors, Sketches. Nineteenth and early Twentieth Century. Hudson River School, Pennsylvania Academy, Cape Ann artists, Ash Can, Woodstock, Florida Indian River, American Impressionists, etc. I can provide some background about artists and perhaps a rough appraisal or guidance towards obtaining a value. I am acquainted with many of the best American art dealers and auction houses. Original works only, I do not follow the print market. I do NOT field questions about prints.

Important to know
I am not expert in European art. I encourage you to send questions on European artists to other experts on this service. NO PRINTS:I encourage you to seek help on prints elsewhere. Two sites come to mind: www.artoftheprint.com and www.philaprintshop.com

Experience in the area

I have been collecting original American Fine Art for over 20 years. I have curated art shows, and I have served as a dealer, providing appraisals and guidance for the last 8 years.

What do you like about this subject?

I have a keen interest in the Hudson River School painters, particularly those artists who spent time at Lake George in the Adirondack Mountains. Among them: David Johnson, William Hart, John Bunyan Bristol, Richard William Hubbard, Nelson Augustus Moore and others.

Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:

Fine Art may seem intimidating...but it is not! Most art dealers are highly approachable and they regard no question as inappropriate.

Relax, don't work so hard. The internet can be a tough battle sometimes! Don't worry about its "formal name". Not at all important, unless it gives a location or date, or some other interesting

2009-11-04 little treasure or just a painting of an ass & 2 boys:

Looks to me like you have an American 19th century genre painting. I would think the 1883 date might be closer to when this was painted than the 1853 date. The cherub on the animal and the older brother

2009-11-03 Emmanuel Oberhauser Painting:

Timothy, Sotheby's sold an Oberhouser that was considerably bigger in April, 2006 for $13,200 including Buyers Premium. Another large one, 27x41, with a similar outdoor Bacchanalia scene sold in Vienna

I did not receive the picture of the painting. Merely the signature. I suggest you may have a listed artist. Signature looked like "Fr... Carroll" to me. And I find three instances of "Fr..Carroll"s

2009-11-02 Old Picture signature:

Larry, That is a unique signature! I did not receive the picture of the painting. Merely the signature. I doubt seeing the picture itself would aid me. I suggest you may have a listed artist.
