Expert Profile: Frank Leeding

Expertise:  I can speak (somewhat "expertly") on the concepts/motivations/aesthetics of "performance art".

Experience in the area
I have performed art in the sense of "performance art" - as opposed to theatre, musical performance, etc. I have been involved in almost all stages of the production of performances with and by other artists. Including site selection/design, classical set creation, sound and lighting design, etc. Briefly performance art is theatre without the script (or at least minimally dependent on script).

Education/Credentials
BSCS, University of North Texase, Denton. MA (ATEC), University of Texas at Dallas, Richardson.

Past/Present Clients
Participated in the Inner-urban Arts League events in Dallas, TX. 2006.

What do you like about this subject?  Ever since Hans Namuth filmed Jackson Pollock painting, as well as of course Andy Warhol's promotion of the "Art Factory", artists have become more "accesible" - we still go into the studio and "paint alone". Performance is simply another canvas (albeit one in 4D - involving time).
What do you still hope to achieve/learn in this field?  I think that the works of previous performance artists (my fav's include Joseph Beuys, Barbara Kruger's "public messsages" series, and Jim Dine and the old "happenings" days. These challenges *must* be met with reflection and of course the production of NEW art.
Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:  Josephy Beuys grew up in Hitler's Germany as one of the "Hitler Youths". After the war - when he leared exactly what was going on - he began a spiritual quest bordering on shmanism. Neo-nazi's actually shot him attempting to kill him for leaving the "faith". He lived and taught and *performed* for many years and was known for his "trademark hat".
Something controversial or provocative about this subject  Where exactly does the performance begin/end? With the antics of rock bands the performance artist must continually seek new ways of understanding and expressing their own vision of "art". I still maintain that performance art and theatre are radically different - even though in the limit they *do* appraoch each other in content and method.
