Expert Profile: Bob Buethe

Expertise:  Can answer questions about American (and some European and Asian) comic strips, cartoonists, and comic books (especially from the 1960s and `70s). Also well-versed on topics related to cartooning techniques, composition, and art supplies. I don't consider myself an expert on animated cartoons, or on the collectibles market (i.e., how much old comic books or cartoon artwork are worth). If asked, I'll try to answer questions in these areas, but you can probably get equally good answers from Wikipedia or Google.

Experience in the area
Forty years reading and collecting comic books. Over twenty years as an amateur cartoonist. Extensive library of cartoon- and comic-related reference books.

Organizations belong to
Amateur and Professional Cartoonists Association
American Mensa

Publications
Hogan's Alley magazine

Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:  "Cartoon" comes from "cartone," the Italian word for cardboard. In fine art, it refers to a preliminary drawing for a planned painting. When the British Parliament burned down in 1834, artists submitted cartoons of historic scenes for the new building's walls. The magazine Punch printed parodies of these drawings... and the word "cartoon" came to mean "funny drawings" to the public.

2008-11-08  I'm trying to find the name of a cartoon Hi, Misha -- At first, I thought that "Minay" might be a misspelling of "Miņet," the French word for "kitty." But the only cartoon I found that fit that notion was the French translation of "Sylvester...
