Expert Profile: Trish S.

Expertise:  I can answer many questions about livebearing fish; most freshwater fish; diseases and treatments; aquarium setup/cycling/ conditioning/water parameters; feeding/what to feed; compatability of fish; behavior and behavior problems; most any question about fresh water fish that you may have. I am a "perpetual student" in that I am constantly reading about fish and their care/maintenance, disease, etc., and if I feel I do not have enough information to provide you with on a question that is asked, I will spend the time needed to provide you with a detailed, knowledgeable, well thought out answer.

Experience in the area
All experience is from owning/maintaining tanks and different fish for many years; I am always reading and learning new things about fish, their habitats, aquarium maintenance, disease, etc. I am a successful breeder of livebearing platys and mollies and will soon be venturing in to breeding cichlids.

Organizations
I am a Top Contributor in the Fish section of Yahoo Answers, and attained that status within 3 weeks of signing up. In order to attain this status, you have to meet the guidelines in proving that you are knowledgeable in an area, and I did that very quickly.

Publications
Not exactly a publication, but many of my answers appear in Yahoo Answers fish section under the name MrsCrabs.

Education/Credentials
All my knowledge comes from hands-on experience as well as reading and research. To me, this is just as good as sitting in a classroom, if not better. I spend my spare time reading and researching answers to questions I have and others may have.

What do you still hope to achieve/learn in this field?  I am always reading and learning about fish, their care, tank care, etc. It's amazing how much there really is to learn! I guess you can call me a "perpetual student" as I don't think I'll ever become tired of learning about fish.
Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:  Goldfish are so misunderstood. Goldfish need at LEAST 20 gallons of water and superb filtration in order to live a decent quality life. They are nick-named "pigfish" because of the amount of waste they produce. These fish are in no way "beginner" fish because the do require an extraordinary amount of care and dedication to same.
Something controversial or provocative about this subject  The average lifespan for a goldfish in the United States is 3 weeks. This is due in part to the misconception that goldfish can live in "goldfish bowls", and this is the furthest thing from the truth. I feel selling these fish for fishbowls should be outlawed. That's just my opinion.

2008-10-02  cloudy water Hi Shirley. I had a couple of different thoughts on the cloudy water, but first and foremost I wanted to suggest that you DO NOT (caps for emphasis only) start "dumping" chemicals in to the tank in an...
