Expert Profile: Tom

Expertise:  While it is a huge topic, I am well-versed in World War II generally. There is a huge wealth of information available on the internet, HOWEVER, one has to know the trash from the gems. Many sites which are not obviously credible (govt, university, and museum sites, for ex.), provide erroneous information (intentionally or otherwise).

Experience in the area
BA in history, and been reading and studying WW2 as my 'hobby' for 30 years. Regular contributor to several online forums in military history, WW2, and related areas and topics.

Organizations
None relevant to this topic.

Education/Credentials
BA, History (Secondary Education), with minor in Geography
US Army Engineer Officer (Officer Basic and Advanced Courses)

What do you like about this subject?  Everything! Especially the fact that after 30 years of reading about it and talking about it, there are entire swaths of it that I know nothing about - there is always something new to learn. Also, WW2 is very relevant to today, and still shows up in the news regularly.
Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:  About 40 American Aleuts were captured by the Japanese when the invaded Attu island in 1942. They were sent to Hokkaido (Japan), and spent the war imprisoned there.
Something controversial or provocative about this subject  While the US did a great deal to win the war for the good guys (freedom, democracy, rule of law), when it comes to defeating the main Axis, Germany, we actually come in 2nd behind the Soviets!
