I think you might have been misled - Emerson Lake & Palmer did a rocked-out version of this in the 70s, and that might be the version you're seeking. Here's an example of their rendition of the piece

I think that was the song "Last Chance" by the group "Shooting Star". It had some popularity around 1980. Pretty sure I recall the lyrics you cited in that track. Try downloading a sample clip somewhere
That piece of equipment is called a "talk box", it's basically a tube attached to the amp/drivers that allows vocal inflections to shape whatever notes are being played on the guitar. You can learn more
