Expert Profile: David McWethy

Expertise:  My best answers will be of the general or conceptual nature (i.e. "How should I attach a deck ledger to concrete block?" or "What are the pros and cons of treated lumber vs. composite material for decks and rails?"). I'll probably refer on to my (many) betters questions regarding the specifics of code compliance; characteristics of the lesser-used woods (mahogany, ipe, etc.); or ones where I just don't feel confident in answering with words as opposed to even minimal drawings, sketches, or illustrations. It can be true that not only is a picture worth a thousand words, but $6,000 for remedial repair because of a misunderstanding in, say, construction sequencing.

Experience in the area
For 10 years I was a "hands-on" Facilities Manager in charge of--among other things--ADA and JCAHO plant, facility & safety management code compliance and the repair and maintenance of 15 buildings in four counties (with a department staff of 4); subsequent to that I was "the crew" for the design and installation (on a total of six homes) of all decks, rails, ramps, porches and stairs for the local Habitat for Humanity chapter--and pardon the hubris, but single-handedly erecting and solidly attaching to concrete piers two 14'-long "six-by-six" treated lumber posts that constituted the sole outside vertical structural support members of not only a 6' x 10' entry deck but the roof over it; on a steep Arkansas hillside; and have them end up plumb, square, straight, attractive, and still as solid today as they were five years ago is not something every nail-pounder can do. Amazing! I would have like to see that being built! Let's see: One hand to hold the 14' six-by upright; one hand for the air-nailer; the toes of one

I thank you for your response. I have had so many conflicting solutions but I think I have bought a fence that is going to be a constant problem. I

Mac, You hit the nail on the head with the metal and canvas description as well as your vision of the platform. I was leaning toward the "don't worry

Wow that was a gret responce. Thank you for all the time you spent to make a clear picture of a method to solve a problem.
