Expertise

Knowledge about almost everything to do with beef and dairy cattle. Strong points include breeding/calving/weaning, breeds, feeding, starting-up, pasture/range, most physiological questions, and genetics. PLEASE use your large animal veterinarian as a primary source of information if you have any health-related, life-or-death concerns about your animals.

Experience in the area

I raised stocker steers with farm family, helping with feeding, handling, checking for sick and injured calves, identifying bull calves, pasture management, etc. I also worked at local veterinary clinic with dogs, cats, horses and cattle. Cattle include breeding soundness exams on bulls, castration, fixing prolapses, preg-checking, C-sections, calf pulling, vaccinations, etc.

Education/Credentials

Four years BSc of Agriculture majoring in Animal Science at the U of Alberta, specializing in cattle, animal health and behaviour, forages, pasture & range management, and genetics.

What do you like about this subject?

It's interesting. There's way more to cattle than most people realize. Cattle have been a strong interest for me since I was able to help with the steers at home.

Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:

There are over 950 breeds of cattle in the world. Bos taurus is the species that refers to the European-type breeds; Bos indicus refers to the Asian and African humped breeds. The American Brahman is of the species Bos indicus.

Something controversial or provocative about this subject

Cows may produce a lot of methane, but when raised on pasture, the benefits of grazing cattle on pasture outweigh the increased methane production from cattle in comparison to being raised in a feedlot.

Hi Ann-Marie,    Your question really will be highly influenced by what type of cattle you're referring to. Beef cattle have different diet requirements than dairy cattle, and even within the type of beef

2012-04-09 warts on cattle:

Hi Dianna,    Generally warts appear on the skin of the animal and not in the corner of its eye.  I think that is something that is out of my expertise, especially when the description is quite vague and

2012-03-17 "cauliflower warts":

Hi Jan,    Warts are not going to hurt the calf nor affect the meat. You could try to vaccinate, but most of the vaccines for warts are a crap-shoot.  You're better off letting Time do its job with the

2012-03-05 concerns about cow in her last stage of pregnancy:

Hi Chris,    To be frank, no, this sounds to be completely normal. You have to expect a little slippage when she's laying down like that.  However, I'd be more concerned if I where you if she were showing
