Expert Profile: Abi

Expertise:  I can answer questions on pretty much all CHICKEN breeds, including fancy and bantam birds. I can give advice on how to get the best egg production, brightest yolk colours and darkest egg shell colours, breeding, bird problems/illnesses (although I haven't yet found a good easy solution to scaly leg, which is something my birds sometimes suffer with, unfortunately, as this means a lot of hard work for me! I am open to suggestions!). I can give advice on all aspects of basic chicken care but I breed chickens for my own pleasure only, I do not often show or sell my birds. PLEASE SCAN THROUGH OTHER Q&As I HAVE ANSWERED TO SEE IF THEY HAVE AN ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION.

Experience in the area
I own and breed a wide range of chickens, but I speciallise in cochins and crevecour bantams; crevecours have a large crest (an afro!) so I can answer questions on problems concerning them; cochins have feathered legs, which leads to no end of problems which I have experienced! I also own a large flock of domestic, rescued 'battery' hens, and a single maran hen, Hilda, who is the matriarch of her flock, so I can give advice on how to get the best colour of maran eggs!

What do you like about this subject?  Chickens make fabulous pets, for children and for adults, and are incredibly rewarding; they produce tasty eggs and do not need half as much maintenence as other pets. I love hearing about other people's pet birds and their personalities- don't be afraid to babble on about them in your questions!
What do you still hope to achieve/learn in this field?  I would hope to learn the tips and tricks other chicken owners and breeders use to cope with your everyday chicken problems- everyone seems to have a different method!
Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:  Chickens are more intelligent than you think- they have over 40 words in their vocabulary! They have many different noises for danger, to tell the other birds whether the danger is on the ground or in the air, and what kind of danger it is! They also teach their chicks not to eat poisonous plants by guiding them away from them.
Something controversial or provocative about this subject  People think that because chickens are 'stupid' that keeping them cooped up in battery cages or in a smelly barn is not as cruel because they don't know anything else. Anyone who owns and loves their chickens will tell you that this is incredibly cruel and the chickens do know whats going on !!

Thanks for your speedy answer. I will try putting the rooster on a perch. I have avoided handling him because he is so aggressive. Initially, I tried
