Band Management and Promotions/Expert Profile

Expertise

I can answer questions about booking, fees, contracts, management, promotions, media, copyright, publishing, and any basics about a musician's life. I can't answer legal questions, other than copyright and publishing. Don't fret if you feel like it's a "dumb" question. All bands run across the same issues, big and small, and I'm more than happy to give you my advice. Whether or not you take it is up to you!

Experience in the area

I own a small management firm called Gunjer Productions (www.gunjerproductions.com). I represent bands in Charlotte, ranging from EBM to jazz. I am a manager and booking agent.

Past/Present Clients

Groove 8, Angels on Acid. I also did consultation work for Hot House Hefftones and The Body Bags.

What do you like about this subject?

I love helping anyone out with anything musical at all. I was fortunate enough to be able to study what I really, truly love and I want to share that knowledge! It shouldn't cost a fledgling band an arm and a leg just to get some sound advice.

What do you still hope to achieve/learn in this field?

I'd love to be able to make a living as a manager, A&R rep or booking agent and quit my day job.

Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:

Have you ever heard the phrase, "A defendant who represents himself has a fool for a client?" The same goes with contract negotiations. The record label execs know more than you do. Spend the money. Hire an attorney. You'll be very pleased that you made such a smart decision.

Something controversial or provocative about this subject

Gwen Stefani's first job was working at Dairy Queen. Madonna worked for Dunkin' Donuts. Mick Jagger was a porter in a mental hospital. Sheryl Crow was an elementary school teacher. Jon Bon Jovi made Christmas decorations. Christina Aguilera lost on Star Search. Lil Kim worked at Bloomingdale's. John Legend worked at Sears. Elvis was a truck driver. Now then, don't you feel better?

2011-02-27 Charge for PA system use?:

Hi Frank,    I can see your point economically, but unfortunately the generally accepted principle when it comes to band gear is "all for one and one for all!"  The only way I can think of to help reimburse

Hi Autumn,    It looks like you're on the right path already. You've got the right idea - sing whenever and wherever you can. Here's the thing about being 13, your voice is still in it's developmental

Hi Don - You can always ask, but you won't get it 9 times out of 10. With bartenders comping drinks, adding free shots, etc, etc, you wouldn't get paid what it was really worth anyway. Bar managers have
