Expert Profile: Panya

Expertise:  Currently, I have 33 mice 12 boys and 21 girls. I also have 2 cats and tropical fish. I can help with behavior problems (I've encountered plenty), breeding, most health problems etc. I don't know a lot about genetics in mice.

Experience in the area
I have kept mice for 7 years and I have a lot of experience with mice (some they don't tell you in books!). I would like to share what I have learned. To the left is Freckles, who had 68 offspring in his lifetime (he was 1 year when I adopted him). Behind him is one of his sons.

What do you like about this subject?  I love mice, they have such big personalities! Mice are great pets to have; they are low maintenance ie don't take up a lot of room, not demanding of your time, inexpensive to house, buy and feed) short commitment (1 -2 years), quiet (except for the squeaky wheel), the girls don't smell, travel easily.....
Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:  Watch out for wild mice squeezing into your cage full of girls. 3 weeks later you will have an army of mice! 1/2 wild mice are not as tame (despite socializing them from birth). They will be jumpy, have shorter tails and are more likely to cannibalize other members of the cage. I have learned this from experience. Panya is egyptian for mouse.
Something controversial or provocative about this subject  Mice are fertile all their lives (I have read they can't have babies after 12 months...)You are lucky if a mouse sees 2 years despite books saying longer. Mice aren't as keen on cheese as books/cartoons think! Pregnant mice like cheese (for the protein) but prefer fromage frais.
