Expert Profile: Frank DeFreitas

Expertise:  Full-time holographer, published author, educator, talkshow host; and owner of laser & holography studio for 25 years (actively involved in field for 32 years). I'll take questions related to the creation of 3-dimensional laser holograms, and the field of holography in reference to the visual arts. If there is a question that I cannot answer, I will do my best to point you to where, or how, the answer can be found. Experience in the following TYPES OF HOLOGRAMS: white light reflection; pseudocolor reflection; stereogram/integral/multiplex (flat); laser transmission holograms. TYPES OF APPLICATIONS: archival/historical; mini-portraits (both film and digital based); commercial/corporate logos; medical.

Experience in the area
I viewed my first hologram in 1968 (40 years ago); got actively involved with the field in 1976 (32 years ago); and opened my own laser and holography studio in 1983 (25 years ago). I am a full-time holographer. Published author (Shoebox Holography / Ross Books); Educator (laser and holography programs, public and private); Talkshow host: HoloTalk

Publications
Shoebox Holography (author, Ross Books); L.A.S.E.R. news; Leonardo Journal; Holosphere; SPIE holography working group;

Education/Credentials
Graphic Arts, Prepress and Typography; Philadelphia Printing School

Awards and Honors
Sigma-Pi-Sigma, American Institute of Physics; International Holography Fund Award (2007)

Past/Present Clients
I have provided laser & holography educational programs for The Franklin Institute, Phila; Liberty Science Center, NJ; The Discovery Center of Science and Technology, PA; Lehigh University Physics Dept.; Lehigh-Carbon Community College; Northampton Community College; Georgian Court University Physics Dept.; The Smithsonian Institute, Wash. D.C. (Hirshhorn), the Urban Systemic Initiative (NSF); and many elementary, middle and high schools throughout the northeast region -- along with several National Science Foundation-funded programs in other areas of the U.S. You can visit my website at: HoloWorld

Ask a Question
Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:  Holography is a Nobel Prize winning field (physics).
Something controversial or provocative about this subject  Not all 3-dimensional images are holograms. In fact, the ONLY images that are truly holograms, are those images created specifically with the discipline of holography.
What do you like about this subject?  I grew up with the field of holography. It allows artists to create images that have never been experienced before with any other media.
What do you still hope to achieve/learn in this field?  I've done a lot in 25 years . . . but I still hope to bring as many people into the field as possible while I'm still here!
