Expert Profile: Myrna Ellis

Expertise:  I have no medical degree, but I have been living with this condition for the last 5 years. I have made it my business to find out all I can about it. There are only a few medications used for Osteoporosis. I can tell you about them. I can tell you about the tests that will detect it as well as at what age they should be done. I can tell you how to interpret the results of these tests. I know the causes of Osteoporosis, and most of the studies that have been done. I know how much Calcium and Vitamin D each age group needs, and which foods contain the most Calcium. I can help you cope with it and I can give you hope that it can get better--mine did.

Experience in the area
I have known I have had Osteoporosis for 4 years, but I had the symptoms for a year before that date. In fact I probably had Osteopina simce shortly after Menopause. When I got the results of my bone scan I had severe Osteoporosis. My Vertebrae had shrunk, so some of them slipped out occasionally and pressed on the nerve. I went for 3 weeks once feeling like I had a broken arm and I have had vertigo and pain from the nerve that goes to the ear. My hips were the worst. I fell and broke my left hip and had to have a hip replacement, because as the Doctor said my bones were mush. There is hope though, with the proper doses of Calcium and Vitamin D and bone builders, my bones are almost back to normal. If fact my spine is above normal for my age and my hips are not far behind. I'm back to the Osteopina stage.

Education/Credentials
None. However I am the curious sort. Tell me I have something wrong with me and I have to search out all the knowledge I can.

What do you like about this subject?  There is nothing to like about this subject, but I would like everyone to know what I know about it. It might save someone from going through the ordeal that I went through.
Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:  As many as half of all children go into adulthood with insufficent bone strength. That's scary, and I'm positive that was me.
