Expert Profile: Matthew Roberts

Expertise:  I will be able to answer many questions about Gary's recorded music, touring history, personal life, background, musical and other influences, views on other musicians, politics, religion and society. I will also be able to offer guidance on other people's views of Gary, such as pop stars and the media, and his influences on music. I won't know everything, but I will make clear where a response is uncertain or where it is simply personal analysis.

Experience in the area
Like most Numan fans, I became aware of him in 1979. I wonder how many people knew he existed in 1978? Since then, I have followed his career very closely, buying every release I could find and every newspaper or magazine featuring him. I have seen him live on approximately 90 occasions and met him around a dozen times.

Organizations
Formerly the Gary Numan Fan Club, now sadly defunct in the internet age.

What do you like about this subject?  It's all there in the music. As a kid, Numan's music sounded astounding and I was instantly hooked. As I've grown older and my musical horizons have expanded, I still feel that Numan offers something unique and thrilling to the world of rock music.
What do you still hope to achieve/learn in this field?  You shouldn't know too much about your heroes. However, I am still fascinated by the evolution of Numan's music: the music that influenced him, the stories behind the songs, and so on.
Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:  Rumoured collaborations that have yet to happen or see the light of day: Trent Reznor, Billy Corgan, Liam Howlett.
Something controversial or provocative about this subject  Numan voted Tory in '83. Being essentially apolitical, he didn't anticipate the media backlash. For years it was inconceivable for some publications to give positive feedback on Numan's music - reviews tended towards personal abuse. The music media is now essentially apolitical and it is interesting that Crispian Mills was pursued with far less venom after admitting an interest in Nazism in 1997.
