Expertise

I can answer biology-related questions in the areas of evolution, zoology, botany, genetics, and ecology. But I don't answer homework questions or provide ideas for your science fair projects. So students please do your learning the right way by reading your text assignments and studying!

Experience in the area

At the University of Miami, I teach Evolution and Biodiversity, Botany, Zoology, Genetics, Ecology, and a variety of seminars (e.g., the Biology and Evolution of Human Gender Roles).

Education/Credentials

I have a B.S. in Biology and an A.B. in English from the University of Southern California (1980). I earned my Ph.D. in Biology in the area of evolutionary biology/visual physiology from the University of Miami in 1989.

Past/Present Clients

I am currently an "expert" in both the "Rabbits" and "Wild Animals" categories.

What do you like about this subject?

Hey, I got a Ph.D. in the subject. I guess I must love ALL of it. But my favorite areas are zoology, botany, and evolution.

What do you still hope to achieve/learn in this field?

I hope I can help others learn about and love biology.

Something controversial or provocative about this subject

If you're going to teach the Biblical account of creation as science in public school classrooms, then you'd better be ready to also teach the children about the Science of the ancient gods of Scandinavia, Greece, Rome, India, etc. And you must *especially* include the Science of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Everyone should get a fair shake.

2012-01-18 Large Punnett Square Problems:

Dear Sara,    Well, that was sort of a trick question.  If the genotype was really AaBBCCDDEE, then there are only TWO possible gamete types with respect to those genes, because only one of those loci

2012-01-14 Cloning: hair follicles?:

Hi, James    If we knew what makes certain types of structures difficult to clone, then we probably could overcome those barriers.  But unfortunately, we don't really know.      A hair follicle isn't really

2012-01-10 Cells: Cytoplasm gel vs. sol:

Dear Fish,    A cell with cytoplasm in sol form has broken down the actin filaments that give the cell its cytoskeleton structure.  Sol is more liquid than gel, in which the cytoskeleton is intact, forming

2012-01-09 Cloning: hair follicles?:

Dear James,    Individual cells and things like hair follicles are not really the realm of cloning so much as tissue and cell culture. And those things are quite sophisticated these days.  I don't know

2012-01-08 biology best:

Dear Faiz,    Wildlife conservation, ecology, so many fields in which not just zoology, but plant/animal interactions are important, might be interesting to you.  You can also find research positions,
