What do you like about this subject?  I like 19th Century U.S. history because many exciting and important events happened that define who we are as Americans today. Many of today's problems and questions have a direct connection to events that happened in 19th Century America. If I had to pick a specific time period, I would pick the decade of the 1850's as my favorite.
Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:  The Confederacy had many minorities serving in the army. The slant on this in historical books is that blacks were merely laborers, cooks, and teamsters. This is not true. There were several black infantry regiments as well as many other regiments which were partially made up of blacks, hispanics.
Something controversial or provocative about this subject  Many do not properly understand that Manifest Destiny it was an idea that God had pre-determined that the US would occupy most of North America. Thus armed with this holy decree, explaines the Westward movement, Indian policies, Mex-American War, filibusters, and The War of 1812. This was part of a global strategy between Eng, Spn and France where NA was the new frontier in the struggle for power.
