History provides insight into human nature.
History is never a dead subject. New information is always being revealed, and old information is being reinterpreted. So, trying to understand the past is a constant challenge.
As a young boy, future president Woodrow Wilson saw Confederate President Jefferson Davis being captured by Union soliders.
History is not an objective description of what happened. Rather, history is a compilation of past events filtered through the mind of a person, and is therefore influenced by that person's personal biases. So, history is an art as well as a science.
