Thanks for your question, The flaking material is probably the old varnish as you said.I would use a soft brush and go over it to remove as much of the flaking material as possible, then I would apply
I only got the one picture but it looks like it has a splint seat and back. Years ago, they used Oak or Ash for splints but most restorers today use Flat Reed as a substitute as a cost cutting measure
You have caned seats it what looks like the standard cane pattern in a "hand cane", it's hard to tell from the picture. Either way, hand or machine, I would go to someone who does this type of work to
Sorry for your problem. First, I hope you don't have them in your home if the beetles are active. If you do, I would suggest you store them somewhere else as soon as possible till the situation is resolved
Your china cabinet was made between the 1920s-1930s. The wood appears to be a Striped Walnut. The frame of the case is probably Birch or Popular stained to match the Walnut. This was the standard for construction
