Expert Profile: Tazz Dickey Sr

Expertise:  I will try to answer all questions on the actual geological name and identification of specimens and interests. I do NOT stay abreast of where the last discovery of this or that is. I do not manufacture jewelry, such as silver smithing, casting, or wire wrapping, but I do sell to people that do and will try to help where I can, but really have no interest in the jewelry end of the business.

Experience in the area
I have extensive experience mining minerals first hand and have some very nice specimens of my own. I speak at schools and rock clubs. I prefer refenence material such as National Audobon Society Mineral guide, but also enjoy a good old Gem Trails of America. I own a museum of gems and minerials for our local home schools and also do assemblies and science fairs. We also teach flint knapping. Organizations Publications Bayshore and La porte news, Houston Chronicle Education/Credentials I actually have no more than high school geology, but have had hands on experience for about 37 years.

What do you like about this subject?  I find it fascintating the colors and formations found in nature. Pertrified wood is amazing, process wise.
What do you still hope to achieve/learn in this field?  I hope to contiune improving my knapping skills to one day make a Mayan Circle Amulet.
Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:  You don't have to spend a lot of money to have a nice collection. Garage sales, old friends and quaint stores provide lots of resources. I once bought a 438 piece Comanche stone work collection out of a old shutdown gas station.
Something controversial or provocative about this subject  The biggest thing that bothers me about rocks and minerals is that people artificially value certain stones over another, and I am not talking money value. I have over 70,000 POUNDS of gem stones, and yet I collect iron pyrite cubical formations (Fool's Gold - one of the cheapest stone around), because I like it.
