Expert Profile: Long Island Gardener

Expertise:  What`s growing in your garden? Delphiniums, Painted Daisies, Roses, Peonies, Lilacs, Tuberoses, Parrot Tulips and Double Daffodils -- I`ve never met a perennial I didn`t like, but I have a weakness for flowers with fragrance. Here in Zone 7, on the North Shore of Long Island, New York, I can`t think of a better way to spend a summer morning. I'm educated in this field, but even better, I am genetically qualified: Part English gardener ancestry, part Irish potato farmer. I have degrees in related fields and a lifetime of hands-in-the-dirt experience. Not convinced? I have a daughter named Holly, a dog named Daisy, a bird named Buttercup, and a house on Garden Street. Still working on the license plate.

Experience in the area
Homeowner for 15 years, 30 years of gardening for personal pleasure, college credits in horticulture and botany, volunteer docent at the local botanical gardens and a library of gardening and landscaping books, some 100 years old.

What do you like about this subject?  My mother introduced me to the joys of gardening. Now I am passing that along to my little girl. I love bringing flowers to work, cutting them for neighbors, having friends over to sit and dine in our garden. I love to plan for constant new color themes throughout the summer and try new hybrids and gardening techniques.
What do you still hope to achieve/learn in this field?  I wish people understood how devastating toxic chemicals like 2,4-D and Diazinon are. People think that because it takes time to develop health problems, chemicals cannot be a factor. We KNOW cancer and other health problems are caused by the environment. Ancient Egyptians never got cancer -- it's all environmental.
Something interesting about this subject that others may not know:  Are you one of those people who hates the smell of Paperwhite Narcissus? It's all in the genes.
Something controversial or provocative about this subject  If God didn't have it in the Garden of Eden, it doesn't belong in your garden, either. Major pesticides sold today at a store near you will be totally illegal by the time our children grow up. Just like cigarettes, consumers will sue and win for pain and suffering. Just watch. You'll see.
