I usually recommend 8" or more when building a raised bed on soil. For concrete, you definitely want to go down to a minimum of 12". The issue is drainage. The deeper the soil, the better the drainage
It looks like the leaves have suffered from sun scald or from too much water. Since the plant had been out the entire month of September, it should have acclimated to the sunny conditions, so I doubt it
