2009-11-12Tenita10101010YesThank you for answering all my questions. My grandmother had the same disease,so I guess I'm next in line. What a horrible way to go. We have already discussed the question of prolonging Mom's life. That seems so unfair. She has had no life for years now. What you did for your husband's father seems the most compassionate thing to do. Thanks you for your kindness in volunteering for such an important task.

2009-11-02Carl10101010YesThank you for such a thorough description of Alzheimer levels. This will help family, and hopefully aid my dad's Family Doctor determine the symptoms of the diseases progression.

2009-10-19Glenda Bryant10101010YesMary, I appreciate your response and knew how you might answer the question. Even I have massage her throat to enable Mom to swallow. I especially liked the point that Mom is incredibly fragile and incredibly tough. Mom's bedsore developed when she stayed in a facility that was undergoing managerial struggles and lack of adequate care. Though she had stayed in that home for nine years, we, the family, moved her to another facility that has a fairly efficient staff who rotate Mom's positioning every two hours. I guess I posed a question or two to this forum to voice what I feel and see. The important point is Mom's contented state, which I thank God for giving her at this time.

2009-09-18Sharon10101010YesDear Mary, Thank you for your thoughtful and compassionate response. Your library of questions/answers has been a tremendous outlet while dealing with my mom's illness. It addresses "gray areas" of Alzheimer's that are based on real people's experiences. Believe it or not, reading other people's challenges and heartfelt stories allows me necessary moments to grieve. It's easy to get caught up in the maintenance, demands of the disease and to bury the emotions during this difficult, long journey. Again, thank you. Sharon Mehr

2009-08-09Gail10101010YesMary, Thank you so much. I appreciate your time and attention. Your response was informative, empathic, and kind. It gives me a template to follow in this somewhat shocked state I find myself in. Thank you for sharing your expertise with a fellow human being in need. I would strongly recommend Mary as a source of support and information on Allexperts. Gail Hamwi

2009-08-02Brenda1010910YesThank you, Mary. It's hard reading your reply but in my heart I know you're right. Mom wouldn't get as much out of the visit as I want her to and it would be too disruptive for her in the grand scheme of things. I really hate this disease. I appreciate the time you took responding. Take care. Brenda
2009-06-16Cynthia10101010YesThank you so much for this very informative and quick response. It has prompted me to start taking action immediately to make sure my dads financial affairs are in order. Its also helped me to see that his anger is a symptom of the disease, and to not take it personally. Thanks again Mary- your advice was a godsend.

Expertise

Several years direct experience as caregiver for family member who died of end stage AD. Did lots of research and dealt with a lot of health care professionals and caregivers over the 7 years from diagnosis to the end. Used various care options from community based resources to increasing levels of institutional. Mother of three, two born during our loved one's decline, so I know what it is to be the ham in the sandwich, taking care of the older generation and the younger at the same time and trying to balance everyone`s needs. Ask me, I`ve probably been there, done that. We made lost of mistakes and learned everything the hard way - but you don`t have to! If I can`t answer your question, I`ll steer you to a place or person who can.

Experience

Currently a program manager for a large utility company. My Alzheimers experience comes from having the illness in our family. Out of necessity, we did a lot of research in order to understand the disease, plan for what might come next, and make the right decisions to help and support our loved one. Please note, I am a Canadian living in Toronto, and therefore am not the best person to ask about US regulations and insurance rules!
