Even though there may not be many people still using 8.6, I was quite surprised to see the lack of knowledge and familiarity by the Mac "experts" who ususally are able to assist me. You are clearly an exception, and certainly a valuable resource. By the way, I ended up having to do a clean install. The old computer appears to be working better and faster than it has in years. The problem occurred when I opened the very first new Word document. I bought and installed Office 2004 and up came my father's obituary. Time consuming- but thanks so much for the other options. I knew I could start from start up discs, but there is so much other software on plus an OS upgrade that school put on there for which I have no discs- that it would make the machine pretty darn basic to revert.
