2009-08-03Jerry991010NoMr. Derringer... Your very prompt replies, combined with your efforts to help me are sincerely appreciated. Thank you so much. Even though there may not be many people still using 8.6, I was quite surprised to see the lack of knowledge and familiarity by the Mac "experts" who ususally are able to assist me. You are clearly an exception, and certainly a valuable resource. By the way, I ended up having to do a clean install. The old computer appears to be working better and faster than it has in years. I know I will have to retire it at some point, but that will be a sad day I don't want to think too much about now :) Best wishes, Jerry

2008-07-29Barry8101010NoThank you very much for your time. Believe it or not I did not save anything to a Normal file. The problem occurred when I opened the very first new Word document. I bought and installed Office 2004 and up came my father's obituary. Fortunately I found the answer and corrected the problem late last night. But it is so encouraging to know you and other like you are out there willing to help the rest of us. I found the information on http://word.mvps.org/Mac/MacWordNormal.html

2007-12-06Amy10101010YesRight after I sent this to you, I remembered learning to turn all extensions off and turn them on individually to see what the problematic one was. Time consuming- but thanks so much for the other options. I knew I could start from start up discs, but there is so much other software on plus an OS upgrade that school put on there for which I have no discs- that it would make the machine pretty darn basic to revert. I appreciate your help.

2007-09-10Brenda10101010YesGeorge, Thank you for your timely response. Although I did not go to my webmail and see your response until after 5hrs to figure this out and fixed myself, the long way, your fix would've been a lot faster. I don't know why I didn't think of trashing the preferences. Will remember for the future. THANK YOU AGAIN!!

Expertise

I know a great deal about Macintosh computers running the older Mac OS 9, considerably less about machines running OS X

Experience

I am the town crier in my home town, a newspaper editor by trade and a shortwave radio fan since, oh, about 1959.
