2009-08-11Rhoda10101010YesHi Ted, Wow - thank you very much for the answer and for getting back to me so quickly with it! When I first heard it I thought that it might mean that the person married to the woman is waiting for her to receive an inheritance - therefore married to her for what he can get from her. Thanks for clearing that up. I assume that expression is used more over in the UK, because I've never heard it over here. Thanks for your time and knowledge, Rhoda
2009-08-08Cynthia10101010YesI am quite excited and impressed by the quick, comprehensive answer - or actually - answers I received from Mr. Nesbitt! It is obvious to any bibliophile or lover of language that Mr. Nesbitt spent a great deal of focused – yet condensed time – to provide clear responses, palpable examples as well as providing a cornucopia of resources (that are indeed appreciated!) for someone he doesn't even know . . . and, to realize that he provides this service without expectations of remuneration! Well, this is my first time visiting this website, and if the other 'experts' available here are merely half as lavish with their time and advice . . . I have truly found a goldmine! I do hope Mr. Nesbitt remains a constant resource here at AllExperts. I wish I could give more than simple accolades . . . Cheers & Plaudits to you, Sir. And, Thank You. Sincerely, Cynthia

It truly showed to what extent you endeavored to help me - I didn't expect such a detailed response. I am very much impressed by your efforts and by the organization that you represent, Allexperts. 2009-03-25Alex10101010NoThanks a lot! Seeing the answer makes me a little embarrassed actually, since it looks like it would have only taken a bit of research on my part.
2009-03-18Eileen10101010NoI was interested in the comment that you put the origin as Latin as most other sources put it as Greek with the Latin form being Acacia

Ted Nesbitt

Expertise

I have an interest in the meanings of words and phrases, as well as how and when they became part of the English language. I enjoy researching idioms, colloquialisms, dialects, and obscurities of all kinds. I prefer short questions on a particular subject, and I will not accept lengthy research projects or term papers. NOTE: ALLEXPERTS CLAIMS THAT I TRANSLATE FROM ENGLISH TO LATIN AND FROM LATIN TO ENGLISH. I DO NOT. ALLEXPERTS REFUSES TO DELETE THE LATIN-TO-ENGLISH SERVICE -- ONE THAT I DO NOT PROVIDE. TRUST ME ON THIS: ALLEXPERTS IS WRONG. I DO NOT TRANSLATE FROM ENGLISH TO LANGUAGE. LOOK FOR A LANGUAGE EXPERT INSTEAD. ETYMOLOGY AND TRANSLATING SERVICES ARE ENTIRELY DIFFERENT. ALLEXPERTS SHOULD KNOW THAT. ALLEXPERTS DOES NOT KNOW THAT. I HAVE TRIED FOR MANY YEARS TO GET THEM TO CHANGE. THEY WILL NOT. SORRY, BUT I DO NOT TRANSLATE FROM ENGLISH TO LATIN.

Experience

I am the bibliographic instruction and reference librarian at a public
college. My master's thesis concerns William Faulkner's tragic novels. I formerly taught advanced placement English at two schools in the Philadelphia area.
I have been a member of the grammar and writing section of Allexperts
for more than a year.

Education/Credentials
