2009-11-18John10101010YesGood answer. Thanks. Some persons felt that the batter should be out because he did not go to first base. Others that he should be awarded first because the defense made no play. My solution as umpire was to charge the batter a strike, and continue, which conforms to your suggestion.
2009-11-13tony10101010YesThank you so much for your help!!
2009-11-10John10101010YesThank you Mark for your quick response to my question.
2009-11-05John10101010NoSorry about that, but, I thought so, but I wanted to make sure. Thank you so much, it didn't cost us the game, though it did kill our rally. I wish our league used ASA umps; some of these other guys are clearly making up the rules as they go along. Thank you.
2009-11-05James10101010YesAs always, a quick, concise and helpful response. Just what I needed.

2009-11-02Clancy10101010Nothank you for your time, i really appreciate it, the switching process actually takes place in the time the balls are being switched out and though it was only for two innings, it never took place after the umpire said batter up. Again thank you for your time.
2009-10-30Mark10101010Noquick response. Too bad our umps are not as conversant with the rules as this cost the girls a game.

2009-10-14Nick10101010YesThanks! Much appreciated. I couldn't find the answer in the book so this helps. Nick
2009-10-13Dale10101010YesThanks for very much for the input; and as way of explanation, this actually did happen as originally stated. F1 (who did not have the positioning for a legit play with ordinary effort) and the b-r collided. F3 dropped the ball. I ruled obstruction and the b-r made it to 1st. Afterward I got to thinking the "what ifs" had things had been slightly different.
2009-10-11Don10101010YesMark, Thanks, I was fairly certain but wanted to verify. It makes it tough when rule books arent posted on the internet. I did find the championship rules and it said the same thing you replied with. I forwarded your response to our local guys, this has happened to us twice and I have questioned the blue both times and both times he tells me he is just following the rules...in the name of fun and setting a good example I just keep my mouth shut and drive on. Thanks again, Don

2009-10-01bill10101010NoThank You Mark.Appreciate your timely response. Will re-read rule to get it right. It differs from baseball where being struck by a ball on a base before it passes a fielder is interference
2009-09-28John10101010YesThank you for the quick responce to my question. I just wanted to be sure that was the correct call so I could better understand the D3K rule
2009-09-27Pete108103YesMark, Thank you for this answer------I guess you thought me rude...........your first response was out of order.....I am an old Woody Hayes fan and he invented "PAY FORWARD" I would never be rude to someone that was doing me a favor. You must have misunderstood my intial question. I was offended by your first response. Still, I do thank you for answering my question and if I can re-pay somehow, I'LL DO IT..........do you drink? Pete

Expertise

I can answer all questions about book rules and "case book" rules governing the playing of ASA softball. Have a REAL situation that happened and are not sure the proper rule was applied, ask me.

Experience

I am a registered ASA umpire, a MASA "At-Large" umpire since 1996 and a retired District Umpire-In-Chief. I have very extensive experience in MASA State Championship and ASA national qualifying tournament play both as an umpire and an Umpire-In-Chief. I completed 3 ASA National Schools including the ASA national advanced umpire school in Ok City("Bernie" for those who know him was the lead clinician, I survived the week and couldn't let my kids watch the game tapes when I got home. No, I love you Bernie). I was one of 4 "Yankee" umpires selected to umpire the Men's D National East Championship in 2002 in Winter Haven FL
