2009-10-09Claire10101010YesThank you very much! In the end, we had to fish the fish out of the tank - they were nearly dead and it was a case of either watching them die (immenently - they were that bad) or try to save them by preforming an emergency relocation um... by scooping them out with a mug into a large mixing bowl of tap water which I know is terrible - but they did survive the night and they're now back in the tank. I did the water change and added the water conditioner.

2009-10-08Natalie10101010NoThanks, Nathan. This makes me feel better, I've read fancy guppies are hard to take care of. I will do change of water and wont add salt, hope this will make my fish happy. Thanks again!

2009-10-07Lexy10101010NoHi Nathan, thanks for your answer, I appreciate it very much and feel much better now! My only follow up is about netting up leftover food. I have these flakes, Tetramin Tropical Crisps I think are what I have - see http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/10725/product.web. I have to break them up into tiny, tiny pieces for the fish to eat them, and they usually get blown around the tank pretty quickly by the filter - so they don't really stay floating on the top. I think it'd be really hard to net any extra up. Do you have any suggestions? I will definitely start with feeding them less so I won't have to net much, and I'll take your suggestion to feed sparingly to starve the worms too. I also read somewhere to try Quick Cure, do you suggest that too? Thanks for the help!

2009-09-12Kathryn10101010YesThank you very much, Nathan. I ws delighted to know that a Platy is suitable for my tank! I bought three males, like you said, and they're doing very well. They seem like very intelligent fish! Once again, thank you so much for all the help!
2009-09-11Abi10101010YesThanks very much! If I could rate more than a 10 I would. Thanks for all the info on the different filters and heaters I can use, and I'll definitely be having a look at getting a Java fern too! Thanks again, I'll definitely use your service in the future :)
2009-09-11Patsy10101010NoThank you so much. You are probably correct about the amonnia poisioning since he is staying near the filter and the tank is only 20 gal. I will use your recommendations and see what happens.

2009-09-11Samantha7101010YesThank you Nathan for a VERY speedy reply. I didn't have a real clue what was going on, and you gave me a great starting-off point. I did a 50% water change as you suggested, but he still wasn't perking up. I finally realized (after doing more reading) that the discoloration was due to fin rot. It is quite progressed as of today, but I was able to get an antibiotic (Maracyn) and he already looks a bit more perky. It is so hard to see him suffer, so we'll see what the good Lord wills... even if he doesn't make it, I'll definitely keep on with fish. It's been a rather forced learning experience but I'm ever so grateful for your help and clarity. Take care and best wishes for you and your own fishes! :)
2009-09-11James10101010YesThanks for a helpful and timely answer. I've been keeping this tank for over a year, and I think that I will try some otocinclus. Thank you for the guidance.

2009-09-09steven10101010Nothank you for your response to my question it was very helpful
2009-09-08Kathleene10101010NoThank you, Nathan. I appreciate your prompt response. I did add the salt and do have the heat in the tank increased due to the appearance of white spots on some of the fish, but will lower it as you suggested once they look better. As my tank is 4 yrs old and all the fish grew up together, my guess is it is the breeding that is going on. I will change the tank around, also as you suggested to see if that doesn't make a difference. If my Balas get too big I will "trade" them back to a reputable aquarium retailer for a smaller species. Great advice! Thanks so much Kathleene

Expertise

I can answer all questions related to freshwater aquariums. If I am not available because I am maxed out, you can find me on the Aquarium Plants category. Fish care, fish behavior, feeding, breeding, and diseases are my specialty. To be specific, I am most familiar (though I am familiar with most species) with Livebearers, Tetras, Barbs, Danios, Loaches, Goldfish, Angelfish (freshwater), Catfish (corydoras, plecos, etc.), Bettas, shrimp, and even snails. I can help out with new tank setups, the cycling process (nitrogen cycle), acclimation of fish, and general care. I can also answer questions regarding many species of freshwater plants, including fish compatibility with plants. Additionally, I can lend a hand when it comes to aquarium support equipment questions, such as those regarding filters, heaters, lighting, and thermometers. Questions about aquarium water conditioners and products are also accepted. I will try to answer your question to the best of my abilities, and if I do not know an answer, I will do my best to find out. I do not have much experience in saltwater aquariums, or pressurized CO2 systems, so I cannot answer any such questions. Best wishes, and good luck to your fish!

Experience

I have kept freshwater fish tanks for many years, and I am experienced with a variety of different freshwater species and invertebrates, such as Tetras, Barbs, Loaches, Danios, Livebearers, Cichlids, Goldfish, Bettas, Catfish, Shrimp, and Snails. I have helped people set up aquariums, and I am very familiar with aquarium products and equipment. I have also bred many fish, and I always care for my fish in the best way possible. What makes a good home for tropical fish? Well, all tropical fish, like guppies and Bettas, require filters, heaters, and a good-sized tank. Healthy fish should be actively swimming and feeding, with defined fins and clear eyes. Take a random check of some of your fish daily, to make sure they're thriving!

Education/Credentials
I own an extensive collection of aquarium-related books and magazines, and have read all about, and I am experienced in, many aspects of humane and proper fishkeeping. Through these books and other articles, from reliable internet sources, and from personal experience with fish, I have a thorough knowledge of freshwater aquariums, fish, and freshwater plant species.
