2008-09-29Jon10101010NoThank you for your prompt response. I respect the difficulty of the job of the referees. I just didn't think the response given matched the laws of the game - goal scoring opportunity shouldn't be the issue. Cheers!

2006-05-24Chulo10101010YesThe basketball insert was just because of the similairty of defensive play when your defending with someone's back to you. Thank you for all your great expertise and quick response
2005-03-21Jim Thompson10101010YesThank you so much! That answer really encouraged me!
2004-04-20John Gieser10101010NoThat's pretty much the same reasoning I use. Most of the time, if the player "safely" clears the ball, I allow play to continue. If there's a chance, especially with younger players, that it might become a "scrum", I stop play before any dangerous situation develops.

2003-07-17Jed Hogan1010910NoYou answered my question perfectly. As I think of it now I may have had my arms raised or jumped more forward than upward. It makes sense anyway. Thanks!!!

2002-01-30Daniel Pankratz10101010YesDear People, As you can see I give John Cummings the highest ratings. With refs around like him the game can only get better. He answered my question clearly and he shows that he has spent a lot of time thinking about the importance of even a small matter like this in the beautiful game. While I am not completely won over by his opinion I do see his side and must admit that in most situations he is right on the money. Thanks for the opportunity to speak with such a knowledgeable and classy person. Ray.

2001-08-09Denis1061010NoPlease do not underestimate the intelligence of the questioner. I wrote PENALTY KICK and I meant PENALTY KICK.
2001-06-07Janis10101010NoThanks for the great answer, & you are more then correct on the pride we have in the kids for a terriffic game! I have a real limited ammount of experience with soccer & your answer really helped clear up a gray area. As a side note, the parents of my team & myself never showed the referee any disrespect on her call but at the same time never got a real sense that she was all that confident in her decision & that was what was so frustrating. Calls, especially judgement ones are a part of the game & your information will extend to as many people as possible. Thanks again!

Expertise

Do you have a call made by the referee in last week`s match puzzling you? Are you a referee who may not be certain that what was done was the right thing to do? I shall be glad to entertain any questions about officiating soccer. The more the players, coaches and supporters understand the referee and his/her decisions, the more fun we can have on the pitch.

Experience

After coaching my son's travel team, I have been USSF State Referee, State Assessor, Assignor and State Instructor in addition to having been a college NISOA referee,a NISOA clinician, a NISOA assessor and a high school referee.
