And having properly prepared (amended as you stated) the soil would have been beneficial before planting overall. :) I am confident that they were hardened off as you noted since they were purchased from an outside nursery and a garden center... which also covers your last thought of buying from a different nursery. I am a strong advocate of the square foot method of gardening and the use of organic controls for pests and diseases.
