Instructions from the Expert:

If you are planning to ask if it's possible for a child to be autistic/ADHD/learning disabled etc AND gifted, here's your answer:
Mental retardation is the only developmental disability that specifies a certain IQ range (below normal), and therefore by definition a child can't have MR and giftedness (defined by an IQ above normal). Every other developmental disability, such as autism spectrum conditions, ADHD, learning disabilities, etc can be present in children in any range of ability, including gifted children. In fact, some conditions, such as autism spectrum conditions, actually appear to be more common in gifted kids than those of average intelligence.
Specific talents, such as musical talents, hyperlexia, math talents, etc can also be seen in any IQ level - even in children with very low IQs (so-called 'idiot savants' for example). I sometimes refer to these talents as 'giftedness' as a shorthand, even though technically gifted and talented are separate (but overlapping) things.

Expertise

My biggest area of expertise is in autistic and other developmentally disabled gifted kids (especially creatively gifted disabled kids). I can also answer questions about gifted/talented children in general. I can't answer questions about legal issues and such (eg fighting the education system), but I can answer questions about what it's like for the child and so on. I'm better at dealing with questions about school-aged children than preschoolers.

Experience

I am a highly creative autistic person with a tested IQ in the gifted range. I've also read a lot about gifted kids.

Education/Credentials
Just high school. I'm a first-year student at university.
