Meteorology (Weather)/Answered Question

Expert: Donald Rosenfeld
Subject: unusual clouds
Question:    Hi--We saw some very unusual clouds when were on the Bay of Fundy yesterday afternoon. As you can see in the photo there were a couple long, ropelike clouds apparently extending for a long distance.  They looked kind of dark and low and were relatively quick moving.  We saw them form and they kept that strange "twisted" shape for about an hour or so.  I looked through the Natl Audobon Society Field Guide to Weather, as well as on the web, and couldn't find any cloud types that looked similar. I hope you can tell us what we saw!  Thanks!
Answer: Hi Marilyn

There are two names for these clouds, Morning Glory:

and Undular Bore:
